Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnionid bivalves (Morrison Formation, Upper Jurassic; outcrop west of Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Emery County, Utah, USA) 1.jpg |
English: Fossil bivalves in the Jurassic of Utah, USA.
The Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation is widely distributed in many western American states. The unit consists of fluvial (river/floodplain) and lacustrine (lake) deposits. Dinosaur bones and dinosaur tracks are moderately common in Morrison Formation sediments. Exceptionally dinosaur-rich localities include Como Bluff in Wyoming, Dinosaur National Monument in Utah, Dinosaur Ridge in Colorado, and the Cleveland-Lloyd Quarry in Utah. The ellipsoidal structures in the talus block seen here are fossil freshwater clams at Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Utah. The host rocks in the area range from mudshales to sandstones to conglomerates. This block is composed of sandstone. The clams do not have their shells preserved - they are internal molds. Molds are a common type of fossil preservation style, consisting of impressions of the exterior or interior surfaces of hard part shells or skeletons. Classification: Animalia, Mollusca, Bivalvia, Paleoheterodonta, Unionida, Unionidae Stratigraphy: Morrison Formation, Kimmeridgian Stage, Upper Jurassic Locality: trailside talus block just west of the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, Emery County, Utah, USA (vicinity of 39° 19' 25.52" North latitude, 110° 41' 19.86" West longitude) |
