Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnion Trust Building, Cleveland, OH (27420310167).jpg | The old Union Trust Building is located at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 9th Street in Downtown Cleveland. Constructed in 1924 and designed by the firm Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, the building was, for a time, the second-largest office building in the world by floor area, and one of the world's largest bank lobbies, which retains that distinction to this day. An interesting feature of the building is the dirigible ticketing office and landing pad on the roof, which were originally meant as a stopping point between Chicago and New York City, something that was never actually done due to high winds from Lake Erie to the north. At the time, the Union Trust Company was the fifth-largest bank in the United States, and was located in a quickly growing and thriving city that was among the nation's largest. The Union Trust Company became insolvent and was forced to close in 1933, a victim of the Great Depression, and the building then became home to the Union Bank of Commerce for many years. The building became home to the Cleveland offices of the Columbus-based Huntington National Bank in the 1980s; however, after moving most of their operations to 200 Public Square in 2012, the building has become largely vacant, and is slated for redevelopment into a mix of residential and hotel space. Today, the beautiful building has been nicely preserved and remains a prominent and notable structure. |
