Title |
Unidentified object of uncertain date |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete copper-alloy gilded and enameled unidentified object of uncertain date. The main body of the artefact is rectangular in cross section and sub triangular in plan, the sides in curve and taper (length, 12.3mm, max width, 13.2mm, min width, 8.4mm). The top of the artefact is beveled,with two incomplete projections, one at either side (2.6mm). The beveled edge has traces of gilding. The front face has four recessed cells which contain enamel, two are triangular and two are semi-circular. The semicircular cells are located on the left and right sides and contain red enamel. The triangular cells are inverted and contain yellow enamel. The triangular cell at the top of the artefact has a raised triangular platform within the cell. Below the enameled cells the artefact has a broadly rectangular projection with an expanded oval tip (18.8mm in length, 4.55mm wide and 2.7mm thick). The projection is D shaped in plan and is decorated with ten transverse grooves. The oval tip is flat. The reverse of the object is mostly flat and undecorated a narrow step is visible on the reverse of the artefact located where the artefact is beveled on the front face. There is evidence of a silvery substance located on the reverse of the main body of the artefact which is possibly solder. The artefact is slightly bent backwards in plan.
The oval tip bears some similarity to an ear scoop, the tip is flat instead of concave which suggests that this identification is impractical. Further suggestions of a toilet implement and incomplete strap end have been made although without a direct parallel. An Iron Age and Roman date has been suggested due to the use of yellow and red enamel along with the style of the artefact. The artefact is 30.25mm in length, 13.2mm wide, 2.75mm thick and weighs 2.96 grams. |
