Summary
[edit]DescriptionUnicorn Darner (8974768805).jpg |
Unicorn Darner, Austroaeschna unicornis, male. Markings on the side of the synthorax are an identification feature. Note the presence of a yellow spot on the mesokatepisternum (the lumpy part of the thorax joined onto the middle leg) distinguishes Austroaeschna unicornis from the Whitewater Darner, Austroaeschna inermis, which has no spot. Dargo VIC Australia, December 2012. This dragonfly has recently emerged and its colouring is still quite pale. The white thread-like bits hanging out of its spent skin are tracheal tubes and remain with the old shell. |
