The DLR Mars camera HRSC recorded the Angustus Labyrinthus region near the south pole of Mars on February 27, 2024. On a high plateau there are several straight ridges a few kilometers long that run at right angles to each other.

Summary

Description
On a high plateau there are several straight ridges a few kilometers long that run at right angles to each other. The resulting pattern was discovered in 1972 in images from NASA's Mariner 9 spacecraft and reminded the scientists involved of the ruins of the Inca city of Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes. This is why the structure is still informally referred to as Inca City in Mars research today. Different processes are being discussed for the origin of the structure. Source: ESA/DLR/FU Berlin
