| Description |
English: Underpass beneath the A31, Winding Stonard, New Forest This view is of the southern side of the A31(T) dual carriageway, with the underpass that leads through to the northern part of the New Forest. The wooden gates (there is a matching one on the far side of the tunnel) are recent additions, presumably to help contain commoners' stock during the pony drifts. The note attached to the gate is a Duke of Edinburgh award checkpoint where a group out on expedition leaves notice of their time of arrival and condition of the group (presumably using a waterproof pen). There is a layby a short distance to the left, where groups can be picked up if necessary. The other side of the underpass is in the neighbouring gridsquare - it can be seen in this photograph: 267475. |
