Norton OENTEAL DISTRICT. ■ 671 below the St. Peter are not well demarked, even the boundarybetween the Prairie du Chien and the Jordan being indistinct.Though water-bearing sandstones will undoubtedly be found belowthe St. Peter, their place can not be predicted and their correlationis not always determinable. In the central and southwestern partsof the district these sandstones are to be found only at great depthsand the cost of reaching them should be well considered before a deepwell is decided on. The history of the Boone wells is exemplary inthis respect. In the northern tier of counties the St. Peter seems to be unusuallythick and the terranes immediately underlying it are apparentlymarkedly arenaceous. They lie within profitable drilling distance ofthe surface and may be expected to yield exceptionally large suppliesof water. Moderate amounts of water may be found in the Galena and Platte-ville limestones, but ge
