Title
Undated and Unidentified Object
Description
English: Lead unidentified object. Cast oval or vesica-shaped plate, now bent to a plano-convex profile. The concave face may retain a simply incised cross with long shaft and short cross-beam. These features might be expected on a personal seal matrix, but there is no further evidence for such a function. The convex face, however, is marked by numerous circular features of diameter 2.4mm-1.4mm which stand in low relief, and which are sealed below a patch of pink-buff mortar with red inclusions, which resembles opus signinum, a Roman cement. This resemblance might equally be misleading; compacted burnt sand from a casting bed might also assume this tint. Patinated, as a surface continuing below the pink accretion. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-1500.
