Title
Undated Copper Alloy Ingot
Description
English: Copper alloy ingot fragment. A fragment of a cast ingot with part of one straight moulded side and otherwise formed as if cast in a bowl-shaped hollow with a flat surface. The ingot includes flecks of charcoal, one or two shaped, and the broken edges of the fragment are rough and irregular. It is perhaps to be associated with another substantial fragment of metalworking waste from an episode of casting reported along with it. The hoarding of metal scrap is characteristic of later Bronze Age activity, while casting might be an occasional rural activity up to the centralisation of manufacturing in post-medieval times. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests the form of the ingot is typical of a later Bronze Age dish-shaped ingot. Sadly, and without laboratory examination to compare the alloys, its relationship with the metalworkintg debris found nearby must remain unknown. Suggested date: Late Bronze Age, 1000BC-800BC.

Length: 94.8mm, Width: 91mm, Thickness: 45mm, Weight: in excess of 500gms, which is the limit of weighing equipment available to this reporter.
