Don Manrique fue quien, aprovechando el viejo y decrépito alcázar árabe, que solo consistiría en una precaria torre situada en lo más alta del cerro, rodeada de pobres construcciones desvencijadas, comenzó a levantar la fortaleza, que es, por tanto, de construcción totalmente cristiana y occi-dental. A pesar de su aspecto arabizante y alcazareño, el castillo de Molina de Aragón es de manos castellanas. La torre de Aragón, auténtica torre albarrana de este alcázar, fortín singular por sí mismo, es lo más antiguo de todo el castillo, tambien es uno de los edificios más altos que se levantron en la Edad Media castellana, 30 metros mide desde el nivel del suelo, hasta la terraza. Diecisiete hombres altos, uno encima de otro, equivaldrían a esa altura. Con los sistemas de ataque practicados en la época de su construcción, aquel bastión era inexpugnable. Y, en efecto, a pesar de diversas batallas y ataques sufridos, nunca ningún ejército pudo conquistar la Torre de Aragón. Muy posiblemente levantado sobre un primitivo castro celtíbero, dominante del valle del río Gallo. A mediados del siglo XI, cuando el Cid Campeador pasa por aquellas alturas, en su camino desde Burgos hacia Valencia, le recibe Abengalbón, rey moro de Molina, y le alberga en su castillo-palacio. Muy posiblemente en esta misma torre.
