Summary
[edit]DescriptionUmm ar-Rasas Church of St. Stephen visitors route H 2819b.jpg |
English: One of some pictures of the Church of St. Stephen in Um ar-Rasas, showing views from consecutive steps through the complex. The pictures carry names A to H, the first one has no letter, but is 2827. We first see the church founded by Bishop Sergius, at C we are on a platform above the main mosaic of the St. Stepher’s. On that platform we turn and see on E that there are some more rooms to the south. On F and G we see there is another room with an apsis, I could not find its name or function. On G we see the Sergius to the right. On H we see below us part of the border of the Stephen’s mosaic, and straight ahead the room with apsis.
On another site I found the "room with apsis" referred to as "Courtyard Church" with the following text: "The access to this building was done by two doors in the medium of the southern wall and by the close churches. It is more probable than it served as "place of distribution" for the Churches of St.Stephen and of Bishop Sergius, of which it was separate only by two arches between which a chancel was established." |
