Description
English: Copper alloy with enamel

Brooch. Umbo or Tutulus Brooch, Cast concavo-convex plate with six equidistant lugs set around its rim, a central cone whose base is defined by inscribed lathe turned circumferential lines, and a central boss with a raised rim and central rounded knop. The flat plate between rim and central cone retains traces of blue enamel. A folded catch plate and a housing for a hinged pin (lost) are retained on the back. Referred to by Mackreth (2011, page 163-4) as a Dished Cone, Type 5. Suggested date: Late Roman, 300-350.

Diameter (lug to lug): 34.6mm, Height (clear of pin gear): 10.1mm, Thickness (plate, at rim): 1.9mm, Weight: 7.63gms.
