Description Fig. 18. — Intra-abdominal View of the Umbilical Region in a Human Embryo 9 cm. in Length. (X 7.) The urachus shows a spindle-shaped widening at its upper portion. Microscopically it could, however, be traced in its continuity not only to the umbilicus, but also out into the cord, as indicated by the cross-section of the cord, where it occupies its characteristic position in relation to the umbilical arteries. The umbilical ring is entirely bridged over by a band of subperitoneal connective tissue. A considerable space exists between the umbilical vein and the umbilical arteries. This arrangement closely resembles that noted in the adult. There is no trace of the omphalomesenteric structures in the cord.
