Description
English: De Grote moskee van Damascus, ook wel de Omajjadenmoskee genoemd, is de belangrijkste moskee van de Syrische hoofdstad Damascus. De moskee is zowel geestelijk als qua architectuur een belangrijk gebouw. Bijzonder is ook dat hij het hoofd van Johannes de Doper als relikwie bevat, die zowel door christenen als moslims als profeet wordt beschouwd. De moskee werd gebouwd tussen 706 en 715 door de kalief al-Walid I van de Omajjaden. Op dat moment in de geschiedenis was Damascus één van de belangrijkste steden van het Midden-Oosten.
