Description
Português: Fortaleza de Santo Amaro da Barra Grande

Assentada sobre uma formação rochosa coberta pela Mata Atlântica e que se projeta sobre o canal de acesso ao Porto de Santos, a Fortaleza de Santo Amaro da Barra Grande começava a ser idealizada há exatos 430 anos. Situada em Guarujá, pode ser vista de vários pontos da Avenida Saldanha da Gama, em Santos, e chama a atenção por sua arquitetura. Em 1584, por ordem de Felipe II, rei da Espanha, ergueu-se na embocadura do estuário de Santos a Fortaleza de Santo Amaro da Barra Grande. O projeto era de Giovanni Battista Antonelli, arquiteto militar que acompanhava a esquadra espanhola do Almirante Diogo Flores Valdéz. Um ano antes, precisamente na tarde de 24 de janeiro de 1583, três navios chegaram à Santos sob comando do espanhol Andrés Higino. Eles faziam parte da Invencível Armada Espanhola, esquadra de 16 embarcações de Valdéz. Sua missão era construir um forte no Estreito de Magalhães.
