Description
The Minerva was built by N.D. Nielsen of Troense in 1840 as a two-masted schooner. She was owned by a partnership in Svendborg until 1872, when H.C. Christensen of Marstal became the sole owner. In 1877 she was lengthened by J.J. Bager of Marstal and became a three masted schooner, as shown in the painting. From 1880 the widow of H.C. Christensen was registered as owner. The ship foundered at the Orkneys in September 1886 and was wrecked and written off. The Captain Fuglsang in the inscription is not known to be associated with the vessel. The identification flags "NLP?" should be "NFPT". Source: http://www.jmarcussen.dk/maritim/skibsliste/side.php?id=14898 (in Danish).
The experts at Bruun Rasmussen mentioned that the work was attributed to Reuben Chappell (1870-1940), but he must have been very young if he did the painting.
