English: Uamh Bhreacain. Breakan's Cave: Breakan was a Norwegian Prince who fell in love with princess of these isles. Her father had consented to the marriage, but on condition that Breakan should show his skill and courage by anchoring his boat for three days and three nights in the whirlpool of Corrievreckan. Breakan returned to Norway where he had three ropesmade. One of hemp, one of wool and one from maidens' hair, for this was being believed to be the strongest of all cables, being crafted from rare and magical material. It was believed that the purity and innocence of the maidens would give the rope strength to withstand the strain. The women of Norway willingly cut off their hair and plaited the rope for their Prince and Breakan returned with the ropes and anchored his boat in the whirlpool. On the first day the hemp rope broke, but Breakan survived the night.
On the second day, the woollen rope broke and again Breakan survived the night again. On the final day Breakan set the rope of maidens' hair but that two broke under the wind and tide. The boat was sucked under by the currents and Breakan was drowned. A surviving crewman dragged his body ashore and buried in the cave which now know as "Uamh Bhreacain" or "Breakan's Cave". When the crewman finally made it home again to Norway and told of Breakan's fate, one of the young ladies was consumed with guilt, for she was not as pure as she had made out and believed it had been her hair which weakened the rope. |
