Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Uachtar Ard (Oughterard) This is the embankment of the former Galway to Clifden railway line just to the west of the former station. It opened in 1895 and closed in 1935, making it one of the shortest operating periods of any railway. The route chosen did not go through the most populous areas, and even here at Uachtar Ard (Oughterard), the largest settlement on the route, the terrain meant that the line had to be built some way from the town. Meanwhile the N59 road still clogs up the centre of the town. Today much of the route of the railway can still be seen, especially along cuttings and embankments, as seen here.
