PACIFIC OCEAN (July 26, 2008) - USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and Carrier Air Wing 5 Sailors prepare to launch aircraft on Kitty Hawk's flight deck. Kitty Hawk recently finished the Rim of the Pacific exercise. The exercise included units from Australia, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, South Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and U.S. Taking part were 35 ships, 6 submarines, more than 150 aircraft, and 20,000 Sailors, airmen, Marines, solders and Coast Guardsmen. This was Kitty Hawk's last exercise before returning to the U.S. mainland for decommissioning in early 2009. Kitty Hawk first participated in RIMPAC in 1973. Kitty Hawk will be replaced by USS George Washington (CVN 73) this summer as the Navy's only carrier operating from Japan. U.S. Navy photograph by Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Kyle D.
