PHILIPPINE SEA (Nov. 12, 2007) - A Strike Fighter Squadron 192 F/A-18C Hornet lands on USS Kitty Hawk's (CV 63) flight deck during flight operations Nov. 12. Aircraft land on the ship's flight deck at speeds up to 160 miles per hour and are brought to a halt by a wire cable (arresting wire) within 300 feet. Unlike landing on the ground aircraft land on the flight deck with full power just incase the aircraft misses the wire and has to take off again. The ship is participating in ANNUALEX19G, the maritime component of the U.S.-Japan exercise Keen Sword 08. The exercise is designed to increase interoperability between the U.S. and Japan Self-Defense Forces and increase their ability to effectively and mutually respond to a regional crisis situation. Kitty Hawk operates from Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan. The air wing operates from Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan. U.S. Navy photograph by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Kyle D. Gahlau |
