Navy vessels make their way through the narrow canal on their way to the Pacific Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico. PANAMAX 2007. PANAMAX is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored, Joint and Multi-National training exercise focused on ensuring the security of the Panama Canal. Civil and military forces from 19 countries comprise Multi-National Force South led by U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Evan Chanik. The exercise includes a variety of surface, naval air and mine counter-measures events; detection, monitoring and interdiction of vessels; and air and ground elements that this year expand PANAMAX to a fully Joint and Multi-National exercise. The exercise runs from Aug. 29 to Sep. 7, 2007.
