English: Mayport, Fla. (Oct. 27, 2006) - The Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, John P. Walters, presents the Director's Award for Distinguished Service for efforts in counter-narcotics operations to Rear Adm. James W. Stevenson Jr. U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO) coordinated with joint forces to disrupt the smuggling of 99 metric tons of cocaine in 2005 and more than 106 metric tons through October 2006. NAVSO is the naval component command for U.S. Southern Command. Its mission is to direct U.S. naval forces operating across 16 million square miles of seas and oceans encompassing the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific, and to interact with coast guards and navies within Latin America to enhance maritime security.
