Image title | 060510-N-1928H-020 Norfolk, Va. (May 10, 2006) -- USNS Comfort (T-AH20) arrives at Naval Station Norfolk May 10, for the last phase of her training mission before heading back to her homeport in Baltimore harbor. While in Norfolk, Comfort will undergo routine sea trials and a Ship Material Assessment and Readiness Testing certification. Comfort departed Boston May 7, after spending three days in port. The first phase of training mission began in Halifax, Nova Scotia where the crew participated in an international medical exercise with the Canadian forces, British Royal navy, U.S. Public Health Service and a representative from the Japanese navy. Comfort most recently assisted in the relief effort in the aftermath of both Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita rendering care to more than 1500 patients. The recent exercise integrated both U.S. military and embarked allied forces, enhancing flexibility should a real contingency arise. Comfort has unique capabilities for humanitarian relief missions and casualty receiving, including helicopter lift, advanced medical equipment, a wide range of medical specialties, berthing and personnel support, as well as supplies to support medical operations ashore.
