Image title | Sailors from Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet raised U.S. flags over the World War II Submarine Memorial at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Tuesday, April 25, 2006. Rear Adm. Jeffrey B. Cassias, Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, will present the flags to family members of the crew of USS Lagarto during a memorial service on Saturday, May 6, at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The submarine, which was built in Manitowoc, was lost in World War II just months before the end of the war. For 60 years, the families of the crewmembers did not know what happened to the 86 submariners who perished. In May 2005, commercial divers in the Gulf of Thailand found Lagarto sitting upright in 225 feet of water. Divers found a large rupture in the portside bow area, apparently made by a depth charge. An open torpedo tube revealed that a torpedo had been fired indicating that Lagarto had gone down fighting. Last May, Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle signed a proclamation making May 3, the day the craft was presumed sunk, as USS Lagarto Remembrance Day in perpetuity. Lagarto was one of 52 submarines lost on patrol during World War II. Museum personnel are making plans to record oral histories of veterans and the surviving family members. (Photo by JOC(SW/AW) David Rush) |
