English: Chalmette, La. (Sept. 17, 2005) – Quartermaster 2nd Class Kenneth Walker, assigned to the amphibious transport dock USS Shreveport (LPD 12), attends to a stray dog at a temporary animal shelter in Chalmette, La., following Hurricane Katrina. The crew of Shreveport has been tasked with helping a local make-shift animal rescue shelter, where they feed and bath displaced animals, as well as build temporary pens and cages for the numerous cats and dogs given sanctuary. The Navy's involvement in the Hurricane Katrina humanitarian assistance operations are led by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with the Department of Defense.
