Image title | 050909-N-5328N-368 AM2(NAC) Bill Hartig, loadmaster onboard a Navy C-9 cargo plane based at VR-52 of Willow Grove, Pa., explains to Andrew McIntosh, a reporter from Pensacola, Fla.-based WEAR-TV3, how his aircraft was loaded with 25,000 pounds of Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The Navy C-9 cargo plane was making its delivery of MREs to Stennis International Airport from the Hurricane Katrina staging area at Sherman Field aboard Naval Air Station Pensacola. Since the beginning of the Hurricane Katrina relief effort, the fleet of three C-9s have been making six flights each day, delivering about 25,000 pounds of food, water and other relief supplies per flight. In the first few days of the relief effort, the C-9s safely transported 578 displaced citizens from the New Orleans Airport. Photo by Gary Nichols |
