English: Pacific Ocean (Aug. 7, 2005) - Quartermaster 3rd Class Timothy Wright of Philadelphia, peers through a stadimeter while taking a reading on the bridge of the conventionally powered aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). A stadimeter is used to measure distances of objects in feet in the water every five to 10 minutes. The Kitty Hawk Carrier Strike Group and the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) are participating in the third annual Joint Air and Sea Exercise (JASEX) with the U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Marine Corps in the western Pacific. JASEX focuses on integrated joint training proficiency in detecting, locating, tracking and engaging units at sea, in the air, and on land, in response to a range of mission areas.
