USS Spruance (DDG 963) participated in a three-day exercise, Sept. 14 - 16, while operating in the Central Arabian Gulf as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The exercise included the firing of some of the ship's weapons systems, like the 5" 54 gun; tactical and surveillance aircraft patrols; and maritime interdiction operations. The U.S. Coast Guard, three U.S. Navy ships and air assets from Carrier Air Wing 17, currently embarked on USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67), took part in the drills. The exercise combined each unit's capabilities and missions in order to practice how they would deter, detect and disrupt international terrorist organizations. "Coalition forces have the means to observe ITO activities and the capability to respond if necessary to terrorist threats or to stop terrorists from planning and executing acts of violence against innocent civilians or sabotaging oil fields," said Capt. Tony Kurta, commodore, Destroyer Squadron 24. U.S. Navy Photo |
