English: Naval Base San Diego, Calif. (Apr. 14, 2004) - Mineman Seaman Benjamin Campbell, left, of New Orleans, La., prepares to get a Rigid-Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) underway for a mine-sweeping exercise with one of two Mine Neutralization Vehicles (MNV) aboard the mine counter measure ship USS Avenger (MCM 1). MNVs are used by MCM ships to locate and destroy enemy mines. Avenger-class ships use sonar and video systems, cable cutters and mine-detonating devices that can be released to detonate enemy moored and bottom mines by remote control. Avenger, homeported in Texas, recently visited San Diego during a four-month training deployment. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 3rd Class Johansen Laurel (RELEASED) |
