English: San Diego, (Mar. 9, 2004) - Sailors “man the rails” today as the amphibious assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5) approaches the pier following a month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism. USS Peleliu is one of five San Diego-based ships assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group One (ESG-1). ESG-1 consists of Peleliu, the amphibious transport dock USS Ogden (LPD 5), the guided missile destroyer USS Decatur (DDG 73), the guided missile Frigate USS Jarrett (FFG 33) and the amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42). ESG-1 is capable of operating in shallow, narrow waterways or the open ocean, day and night, in all weather conditions in support of marine or joint forces operating near-shore or deep inland. Image title | 040309-N-3236B-004 San Diego, Calif. (March 9, 2004) - Five San Diego-based ships of Expeditionary Strike Group One (ESG-1) returned home today following a six and a half month deployment in support of the global war on terrorism: USS Peleliu (LHA 5), USS Ogden (LPD 5), USS Decatur (DDG 73), USS Jarrett (FFG 33) and USS Germantown (LSD 42). The expeditionary strike group is a flexible naval force that can operate in shallow, narrow waterways or the open ocean, day and night, in all weather conditions in support of marine or joint forces operating in near-shore regions or deep inland. Its essential elements include mobility, agility and lethality, giving the regional or combatant commander (Rear Admiral Robert T. Conway, Jr.), the flexibility to conduct operations across the spectrum of conflict in more dynamic environments. This includes such missions as humanitarian assistance and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations, as well as joint support to Task Force operations. It is centered on the capability of the Amphibious Readiness Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and adds the robust strike, anti-air, anti-surface and anti-subsurface capabilities of a cruiser, destroyer, frigate and attack submarine. ESG-1 employs one USMC Aviation Combat Element, one MEU/SOC, two combat escorts. The first expeditionary strike group, ESG-1 is centered on the Tarawa-class Amphibious Assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5). The Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and their embarked Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are based in San Diego, Ca.
