Image title | Marines from the Thirteenth Marine Expeditionary Unit (13th MEU) loading trucks with cases of water in preparation for humanitarian assistance operations in the Al Faw peninsula of Iraq. The Expeditionary Strike Group is a flexible naval force that can operate in shallow, narrow waterways or the open ocean, day and night, in all weather conditions in support of marine or joint forces operating in near-shore regions or deep inland. Its essential elements are mobility, agility and lethality, giving the regional or combatant commander the flexibility to conduct operations across the spectrum of conflict in more dynamic environments. This includes such missions as humanitarian assistance and Non-Combatant Evacuation Operations, as well as joint support to Task Force operations. It is centered on the capability of the Amphibious Readiness Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable), and adds the robust strike, anti-air, anti-surface and anti-subsurface capabilities of a Cruiser, Destroyer, Frigate and Attack Submarine. ESG-1 employs one USMC Aviation Combat Element, one MEU/SOC, two combat escorts (USS Germantown LPD 42 and USS Ogden LPD 5) one Ticonderoga-class cruiser (USS Port Royal CG 73), one Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer (USS Decatur DDG 73) and one Oliver Hazard Perry-class Frigate (USS Jarrett FFG 33) and one Los Angeles-class attack submarine (USS Greenville SSN 772). The first Expeditionary Strike Group, ESG-1 (Rear Admiral Robert T. Conway, Jr., Commander) is centered around the Tarawa-class Amphibious Assault ship USS Peleliu (LHA 5). The Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and their embarked Marines from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) are based in San Diego, Ca. USS Port Royal and USS Greeneville are based inPearl Harbor, Hawaii. (U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate 2nd Class Richard J. Brunson) (Released) |
