English: Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. (May 9, 2003) -- Navy instructor, Damage Controlman 2nd Class Shawn Love, adjusts a recruit’s gas mask during Chemical, Biological and Radioactive (CBR) Defense training at the Fire Fighting Training Unit (FFTU), Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes. The recruits are exposed to an atmosphere of tear gas while donning their masks. The staff then has the students remove their masks and recite their names and social security numbers. This training teaches the recruits that the gas mask works and builds confidence in the equipment and training if they are ever exposed to weapons of mass destruction. The FFTU trains over 47,000 students in basic fire fighting and CBR defense annually. U.S. Navy photo by Chief Photographer's Mate Chris Desmond. (RELEASED) |
