English: Camp Patriot, Kuwait (Apr. 25, 2003) -- More than 2,200 Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, Special Operations Capable (24th MEU (SOC)) begin their journey home while boarding a Landing Craft Utility (LCU) - making them the first Marine force to depart Iraq after the commencement of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The 24th MEU embarked aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Nassau (LHA 4) deployed in August 2002, and received orders to support Operation Iraqi Freedom in March. The 24th MEU is a special operations capable rapid response force that is typically forward deployed in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The 24th MEU will now return to its home in Camp Lejeune, N.C., while USS Nassau returns to her home port of Norfolk, Va. U.S. Navy Photo by Journalist 1st Class Joseph Krypel. (RELEASED) |
