English: At sea aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Oct. 4, 2002 -- An Aviation Ordnancemen assigned to the “Stingers” of Strike Fighter Squadron One One Three (VFA-113) manually loads a 1000 pound Laser Guided Bomb Unit (GBU-16) to an F/A-18C “Hornet” during a turnaround inspection. The GBU-16 utilizes a 1000-pound general purpose warhead. The operator illuminates a target with a laser designator and then the munition guides to a spot of laser energy reflected from the target. The GBU-16 consists of a MK-83 1,000-pound bomb modified with a common Paveway II laser guidance kit. Lincoln and her embarked Carrier Air Wing One Four (CVW-14) are conducting combat missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer's Mate Airman Philip A. McDaniel.
