Description
English: Yokosuka, Japan (Sep. 11, 2002) -- Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Airman Emerson Ibaldez from Pittsburgh, Calif., and Airman Jane Cruz from Austin, Texas, perform the morning ceremonial raising of the “Navy Jack” aboard USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63). A special memorial service is being held in remembrance of those lost during the events of September 11, 2001. Under direction of the Secretary of the Navy, Gordon R. England, all U.S. Navy ships will fly the “Navy Jack” in place of the “Union Jack” for the duration of the war on terrorism. The “Navy Jack” is a flag consisting of a rattlesnake superimposed across thirteen horizontal alternating red and white stripes, with the motto, “Don’t Tread on Me.” Kitty Hawk is the Navy’s only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier operating out of Yokosuka, Japan.
