Description
English: At sea aboard JDS Chihaya (ASR 403) Apr. 28, 2002 -- U.S. Navy Cmdr. Gary Latson (center) and Royal Singapore Navy Lt. Col. Mike Ong (right) take questions from media following a completed training mission aboard the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) Angler Fish 2. The DSRV deployed from the JMSDF submarine rescue ship, JDS Chihaya, mated with a Republic of Korea Navy submarine, which was simulating a disabled submarine on the bottom of the ocean floor during exercise Pacific Reach 2002. Lt. Col. Ong is the head of the Singapore Naval Medical Hyperbolic Chamber, and Cmdr. Latson is assigned as the undersea and diving medical officer for Submarine Development Squadron Five. Pacific Reach 2002 is an exercise hosted by the JMSDF designed to improve submarine rescue capabilities. Members of the United States, Japan, Australian, Republic of Korea, and Republic of Singapore navies are participating in the exercise with observers from Indonesia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Chile, France, China, and India.
