Description
English: At sea off the coast of the central Pacific island of Iwo Jima (Mar. 12, 2002) -- A Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) from Assault Unit Five prepares to enter the well deck of USS Germantown (LSD 42) with USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43) in the background. The amphibious assault ships, along with USS Essex (LHD 2) and USS Juneau (LPD 10) are off the coast of Iwo Jima to support the 57th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Iwo Jima. All four ships are part of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). The 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit embarked with the ARG will transport personnel and equipment to be used during the commemoration.
