Summary
[edit]DescriptionUS Naval Chaplains School Seal 1955.jpg |
English: 1955 version, U.S. Naval Chaplains School seal, then called the "coat of arms."
Design includes the insignias (at that time) of Christian and Jewish chaplains -- the Christian cross and Jewish tablets of the ten commandments, topped by a Star of David, with Roman numerals indicating the commandments -- in the outer ring of the seal. In the center of the design are three images of a hand or hand, representing religious traditions or rituals: top left - a raised hand, recalling the Christian tradition of raising one or two hands when a blessing is delivered, especially the "dismissal" (final) blessing at the end of worship; top right - a hand with a space between the fingers, recalling the Jewish "priestly blessing," although the priestly blessing is always given with two hands, with the fingers separated in this way on each; bottom - two hands holding a host, recalling the sacrament or ritual of Eucharist, when the host is given to each worshipper. |
