Description The U.S. Navy radar picket destroyer USS Southerland (DDR-743) pulls away from the fleet oiler USS Ashtabula (AO-51) in the Pacific Ocean, in 1963. The aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) is visible in the background. Southerland returned to the U.S. West Coast in late 1963 and entered the Mare Island Naval Shipyard, California (USA), for her 10-months FRAM I modernization.
