Description U.S. Navy Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver dive bombers of attack aquadron VA-5A parked forward on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La (CV-38) during a Western Pacific cruise, in 1947. Tracing its origins to 1928, this squadron operated under the designations Scouting Squadron Three (VS-3) and Bombing Squadron Five (VB-5) during World War II, participating in the Battle of Eastern Solomons and raids on the Marshall Islands and Truk. Designated VA-5A in 1946, the squadron became VA-54 in 1948. It was the last fleet squadron to operate the SB2C. During 1947, the squadron completed a Western Pacific cruise aboard USS Shangri-La (CV-38), being assigend to Carrier Air Group Five (CVAG-5).
