Summary

[edit]
Description

A look at the cannons of the Missouri, which could conduct shore bombardments from 20 miles out in the sea.

The Missouri was one of many US Navy battleships, all of which had been named after states, that served in World War II. The Missouri put in additional duty a few years later during the Korean War, bombarding the industrial facilities of North Korea's east coast, such as the fertilizer plant at Hungnam, in December 1950, as US and South Korean troops (and up to a million civilians) were forced to flee south.

After a few decades of retirement, the Missouri was reactivated, with the ability to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles, and deployed for the 1991 Persian Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) to liberate Kuwait. The Missouri was permanently re-retired in 1995; large battleships are not suitable in the modern era, where aircraft and missiles play bigger roles in naval warfare.
