Description

U.S. Navy crew members pose for a photo on the bow of the aircraft carrier USS Midway (CV-41) during her deployment to the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean from 15 October 1987 to 12 April 1988. A Sikorsky SH-3H Sea King of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron HS-12 "Wyverns" is visible on the right.

This photo illustrates somewhat the 186 m long blisters added in 1986 to offset the effects of topside weight growth on draft, hull strength and damage stability. However, the blisters were not effective as she experienced undesirable rolling and flight deck wetness, which adversely affected handling aircraft on deck.
