| Description |
English: The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Lexington (CV-2) recovers aircraft at about 1400 hrs on 8 May 1942, during the Battle of the Coral Sea. The view looks aft along the port side of the flight deck from the front of the bomb-damaged port forward 127 mm gun gallery. The number two 5"/25 gun is in the foreground, trained out and still in operation. The damaged number four and number six 5"/25 guns are immediately beyond. The aircraft were returning from the attack on the Japanese aircraft carrier Shokaku. A Douglas TBD-1 Devastator from Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2) is taxiing forward, while Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat from Fighter Squadron 2 (VF-2), piloted by Ensign John B. Bain A-V(N), is approaching to land. |
