McCain (DL-3), left, and USS Mitscher (DL-2) being converted to guided missile destroyers at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Pennsylvania (USA), in 1966. Mitscher was recomissioned as DDG-35 on 29 June 1968, John S. McCain as DDG-36 on 6 September 1969.
