Summary
[edit]DescriptionUSS Gilliam (APA-57) wreck at Bikini Atoll, 1989.jpg |
English: Wreck of the U.S. Navy attack transport USS Gilliam (APA-57) at Bikini Atoll, in 1989. Visible is the wreckage of the midships house. By accident, the Crossroads Able bomb detonated only 50 metres off Gilliam. In 1946, it was estimated that Gilliam sank in 79 seconds, going down bow first at an estimated 70-degree angle according to the U.S. Navy's interpretation of post-blast photo sequences. In 1989, the divers had the impression that the hull had taken an enormous downward compressive force. The barely recognizable ship had the appearance of being smashed down into itself, with the successive deck levels pancaked down into the hold. |
