ARABIAN SEA (September 19, 2015) - Sonar Technicians (Surface) 2nd Class Jesse Simonds, from Rock Hill, S.C., Zachary Robson, from Hilliard, Ohio, and Seaman Mike Andrews, from Destin, Fla., deploy a multi-function towed array (MFTA) cable during an anti-submarine warfare exercise aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Farragut (DDG 99). The MFTA cable is an active and passive sonar sensor that is towed behind surface ships and listens silently for submarines, and sends out active sonar pings while detecting submerged echoes. Farragut is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations as part of Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region.
