[edit]DescriptionUSS Crockett (PG-88) on the Cửa Lớn River near Năm Căn, Vietnam, in July 1969 (428-GX-743-1140796).jpg |
English: The U.S. Navy gunboat USS Crockett (PG-88) on the Cửa Lớn River near Năm Căn, Vietnam, in July 1969, during Operation "Sea Float". The Cà Mau province on the southern tip of Vietnam was heavily under control of the Vietcong. To establish a base following the Tet Offensive in 1968, several pontoon barges with berthing facilities and equipment for 150+ personnel were lashed together at a naval support base near Saigon. This became base "Sea Float". The entire "Sea Float" base was anchored using a six-point mooring system in the middle of the Cửa Lớn River adjacent to the vacated town of Năm Că. "Sea Float" base was established on 25 June 1969 and was moved ashore to base "Solid Anchor" in mid-September of 1970. "Solid Anchor" was heavily rocketed and mortared in late January 1971. It was formally turned over to South Vietnamese Navy on 1 April 1971 and the last Americans left "Solid Anchor" base on 1 February 1973. |
