Description

This model shows what the wreckage of the Arizona looks like today, with the memorial on top.

After being sunk by a massive Japanese attack in 1941, the ship has remained where it was sunk. Above-water structures were removed in 1961, to make way for a memorial.

A number of other key battleships of the US Navy Pacific Fleet were also badly damaged or sunk on 7 December 1941 during the Japanese attack. Japan hoped that the attack would cripple the US Navy, and sap Americans of the will to fight back; the eventual goal for Japan was to help itself to British, French, and Dutch colonies of Southeast Asia with minimal US interference.

But as it turned out, Japan had grossly miscalculated. The US, whose homeland was safe from warfare elsewhere in the world, mobilized to produce war materials at gigantic scales. Except for the Arizona and two other battleships, the damaged and sunk ships were repaired and returned to service. And after winning the Battle of Midway, the US fought back fiercely, steadily reducing Japan's options. Japan vowed to fight to the death, but surrendered after American atomic bombs incinerated Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
