Description

The U.S. Navy Carrier Battle Group of the aircraft carrier USS America (CV-66) underway. America, with assigned Carrier Air Wing 1 (CVW-1), was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean from 2 December 1991 to 6 June 1992. The following ships were assigned to the Battle Group:

  • the guided missile cruisers USS Normandy (CG-60) and USS Monterey (CG-61);
  • the guided missile destroyer USS Scott (DDG-995);
  • the destroyers USS John Hancock (DD-981) and USS Thorn (DD-988);
  • the guided missile frigates USS Boone (FFG-28), USS Klakring (FFG-42), USS Clark (FFG-54) and USS Simpson (FFG-56);
  • the destroyer tender USS Sierra (AD-18), visible directly left of USS America;
  • the replenishment oiler USS Savannah (AOR-4), visible directly right of USS America.
Not shown in this photograph are the submarines USS Sunfish (SSN-649) and USS Groton (SSN-694) and the ammunition ship USS Suribachi (AE-21).
