English: Lt. Col. Russell Blauw, the Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 40 commanding officer, sits center of two original MALS-40 Marines who were part of the squadron in 2009 when it was first established on Camp Bastion. Cpl. Elinson Santana, of New York City N.Y., and Cpl. Christopher Sagarino, a Farmingdale N.Y. native, both airframe maintainers, fabricated the new squadron logo that would sit in front of their compound, and said they were proud to be the Smokin’ Aces again. The squadron was changed to the Thoroughbreds when squadron was reformed to head back to Afghanistan, but Blauw, whose family calls Beaufort, S.C. home, thought it was fitting to change it back in remembrance of the hard work of the Marines who established the squadron at Camp Bastion. |
